Join us for Integrating Parts Work and EMDR: Practical Tools for Trauma Healing, a full-day workshop designed for EMDR therapists seeking to deepen their understanding and application of parts work within the EMDR framework. This experiential workshop explores how the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model and parts work complement one another, offering practical tools to enhance stabilization, reduce blocking beliefs, and support more compassionate and effective trauma processing. Participants will learn interventions such as psychoeducation, parts mapping, the Meeting Place, and the 6 F’s from Internal Family Systems (IFS) to build safety and collaboration within the client’s internal system.
Through demonstrations, guided exercises, and small-group practice, attendees will develop confidence integrating interventions such as Loving Eyes (Knipe) and the Two-Handed Interweave (R. Shapiro) across EMDR’s phases of treatment. Special attention is given to working with complex trauma, dissociation, and neurodivergent adaptations. Participants will leave with a clear, structured toolbox of interventions they can immediately apply in clinical practice to support deeper integration and healing.
Intended Audience
Master’s level social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists; psychologists; and other licensed mental health providers
Eligibility Requirements: PARTIAL EMDR TRAINING
This workshop is open to clinicians who are at least partially trained in EMDR which means they have completed part of an EMDRIA Approved Basic EMDR Training and/or still finishing their 10 hours of required consultation. It is recommended that participants have completed the full EMDR Basic Training and have experience in using EMDR with clients.
This workshop is not an EMDR Basic Training.
Level of Content: Intermediate
Course Interaction
This live, synchronous webinar is fully interactive. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, share insights, and engage in instructor-led discussions throughout the program. The instructor will incorporate a combination of lecture and visual presentation, small- and large-group discussion, experiential exercises, case vignettes, and video demonstrations to promote reflection, collaboration, and the practical integration of course concepts into clinical practice.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe key principles of parts work (e.g., protectors, exiles, Self) and analyze how these intersect with EMDR’s Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model.
- Identify at least two strategies for assessing a client’s internal system of parts during the preparation phase of EMDR.
- Demonstrate approaches for negotiating with protective parts to enhance safety and readiness for EMDR reprocessing.
- Apply parts-informed techniques to target selection and trauma memory reprocessing within the EMDR 8-phase protocol.
- Implement at least two interventions for addressing common blocks to EMDR processing (e.g., looping, dissociation, protector resistance).
- Facilitate the installation of positive cognitions across parts to promote integration and collaboration within the client’s internal system.
- Evaluate cultural, neurodivergent, and ethical considerations when integrating parts work into EMDR practice.

Workshop Facilitator

Cathy Hanville (they/she) works and lives at the intersection of gender identity and neurodivergence—a space they have inhabited since opening their private practice over twenty years ago, even before they totally understood it themselves. Cathy is an EMDRIA-approved consultant and CE provider who enjoys training clinicians on integrating parts work and EMDR, particularly in addressing attachment trauma and working affirmingly with gender-diverse and neurodivergent clients. They are currently co-authoring a book on using parts work and EMDR for autistic and ADHD clients.
Cathy identifies as gender-queer and was recently diagnosed with ADHD, a discovery that explained a lot! Licensed in Pennsylvania and California, they approach clinical work through a social work lens that acknowledges the structural and systemic contributors to mental health struggles. Cathy lives in Pennsylvania with their wife and three cats—some of whom may make guest appearances in sessions—and finds creative grounding through photography.
