Bringing Internal Family Systems (IFS) into Couple Therapy
January 14-15, 2027; 10am – 4:30pm EST (both days)
Live, interactive webinar on Zoom
Facilitator: Judi Zoldan, LICSW
IFS CEs: 10 credits (pending)
NBCC / ASWB: 10 CE hours
Live workshop limited to 50 participants.
All participants will receive access to the workshop recording for 60 days.

What happens when we bring Internal Family Systems (IFS) into the therapy room
with two people instead of one?
This two-day introductory workshop offers an experiential introduction to Intimacy from the Inside Out (IFIO), the IFS model for couple therapy, developed by Toni Herbine-Blank. Building on the foundations of IFS, participants will learn how internal secure attachment creates the conditions for relational secure attachment, and how working with protective parts transforms conflict into opportunities for connection.
Through teaching, demonstrations, experiential exercises, and discussion, participants will learn to recognize common couple interaction patterns, help partners unblend from reactive protectors, facilitate Self-led communication, and support greater safety, regulation, and intimacy in the therapy room. The workshop also introduces the role of therapist presence, cultural context, and neurobiology in helping couples move from polarization toward connection.
Designed as an introduction, this workshop is appropriate for therapists who are familiar with IFS and would like to begin integrating IFIO into their work with couples. IFIO principles can also enrich individual therapy by deepening therapists’ understanding of relational patterns and the parts activated in intimate relationships. Clinical examples will include both neurotypical and mixed-neurotype couples, illustrating how IFIO principles can be flexibly adapted across diverse relationships.

Level of Content: Intermediate
Intended Audience: Master’s level social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and other healing professionals trained in the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. This workshop is designed for clinicians who have completed IFS Level 1 training, as well as IFS-informed clinicians with substantial experience applying IFS in their clinical work. Participants should be familiar with core IFS concepts and practices.
Prior experience working with couples is not required. The workshop is appropriate for therapists who would like to begin integrating IFIO into their work with couples, as well as those interested in applying IFIO principles to their individual clinical work.
Course Interaction: Didactic teaching will introduce core IFS and IFIO concepts and clinical interventions. Case examples, video, and live demonstrations will illustrate their application in couple therapy. Guided experiential exercises will give participants an opportunity to experience key IFIO practices, followed by small-group reflection and discussion. Large-group discussion will support integration of the material, clinical application, and questions. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, share insights, and engage in instructor-led dialogue throughout the training.
