Special Considerations for EMDR with Autistic and ADHD Clients – Part 1
Friday, July 10, 2026
10:00AM – 5:00PM EDT
Live, interactive webinar on Zoom
Facilitator: Christine MacInnis, LMFT, EMDRIA Approved Consultant
EMDRIA: 6 credits (pending)
NBCC / ASWB: 5.5 CE hours
Live workshop limited to 50 participants.
All participants will receive access to the workshop recording for 60 days.

Your neurodivergent clients don’t experience the world like everyone else,
so why would trauma therapy look the same for them?
EMDR is a powerhouse treatment for trauma, but when working with autistic and ADHD clients, sticking to the standard protocol without adaptations isn’t enough. This training is your deep dive into making EMDR actually work for the different neurotypes in your caseload—and into understanding why you need to do it in the first place.
This training was first offered in 2022 by Christine MacInnis, a lived-experience autistic and ADHD clinician with a PDA profile, when the neurodiversity-affirming movement was still in its infancy. Since then, the field has expanded with more trainings and offerings focused on EMDR with autistic and ADHD clients—but few provide hands-on, practical, guided tools and interventions that you can use right away.
We’ll journey through all eight phases of EMDR with a neurodivergent-affirming lens, learning the “why” behind the necessary adaptations and then applying practical, ready-to-use tools. We’ll also explore something often overlooked: the cultural trauma that comes simply from existing in a world not built for your neurotype.
No boring lectures here. Expect real-life videos, compelling case presentations, group exercises, and live demonstrations that bring these strategies to life. Questions are welcomed throughout the training.
Walk away with a fully loaded neurodivergent-affirming EMDR toolkit and the confidence to meet your autistic and ADHD clients’ unique needs.

Join us in a neurodivergent-affirming learning environment that reflects the very principles we’re teaching. Being on screen all day can be a lot—movement is encouraged, and you’re welcome to engage in ways that work best for you.
You’re invited to show up as you are. You don’t have to mask here.
Can’t sit still in a chair? Move, stretch, or spin around—we’re okay with that. Need to walk on a treadmill? Go for it. Prefer to lie on the floor and listen? That works too (just keep your video on 😊). If you learn best by asking questions, you’re encouraged to jump in at any point—we get it. If speaking up isn’t your thing, you’re always welcome to use the chat or send a private message.
Stim, move, and engage in ways that support your nervous system. All parts of you are welcome here!

Program Content and Timeline
Friday, July 10, 2026
10am – 5pm EDT
10:00 AM – 10:15 AM | Introduction
Overview of current research and clinical understanding of trauma experienced by autistic and ADHD clients within a neurotypical world. Emphasis on the importance of developing a flexible clinical “toolbox” to support neurodivergent clients in EMDR therapy.
10:15 AM – 11:00 AM | Trauma and Neurodivergent Clients
There are several areas that autistic and ADHD clients frequently seek assistance with in therapy. These may include executive functioning, focus and attention, autistic burnout, bullying from neurotypical individuals and institutions, trauma related to masking neurodivergent traits and behaviors, and shame surrounding their diagnoses. This section explores how EMDR can be used to address the underlying negative beliefs clients may hold about how they experience and process their world, and to support more adaptive ways of understanding their neurotypes.
11:00 AM – 11:15 AM | Break (15 minutes)
11:15 AM – 12:45 PM | Adaptations to Phases 1–3 of EMDR: History-Taking, Preparation, and Assessment
Due to the unique ways autistic and ADHD clients may experience and process their world, challenges can arise during the first three phases of EMDR. For example, sessions may need to be structured into shorter segments to reduce the risk of autistic burnout, and history-taking may be less linear than with neuro-normed clients.
This section will review adaptations to the history-taking, preparation, and assessment phases. A live demonstration of attunement during history-taking will be included. Preparation strategies beyond standard resourcing techniques (e.g., container, calm/safe place) will be explored. For the assessment phase, alternative approaches to determining levels of disturbance (SUD) and using current triggers for target planning will be reviewed.
12:45 PM – 1:45 PM | Meal Break (60 minutes)
1:45 PM – 3:00 PM | Adaptations to Phase 4: Reprocessing
While eye movements are considered the gold standard in EMDR, many neurodivergent individuals may find them less effective in supporting dual attention and may report that EMDR does not work for them. Exploring alternative forms of bilateral stimulation—such as large body movements or tactile methods (e.g., tapping)—can help sufficiently tax working memory without disrupting the processing experience. A video demonstration of large body movements will be included.
For both autistic and ADHD clients, differences in interoception may make noticing body sensations more challenging. This section will explore alternative ways of tracking whether a target is reducing without relying solely on traditional body scan methods. The use of cognitive interweaves will also be discussed, and a supporting worksheet will be provided.
3:00 PM – 3:15 PM | Break (15 minutes)
3:15 PM – 4:45 PM | Adaptations to Phases 5–8 of EMDR: Installation, Body Scan, Closure, and Re-evaluation
The final four phases of EMDR—Installation, Body Scan, Closure, and Re-evaluation—can present unique challenges for autistic and ADHD clients. This section will review adaptations for each phase using case presentation and video demonstration, including modifications to the Body Scan for sensory sensitivities.
Participants will engage in guided experiential exercises and facilitated application activities to explore common challenges that arise during the re-evaluation phase and consider appropriate clinical responses.
4:45 PM – 5:00 PM | Q&A and Wrap-Up
While questions are welcomed throughout the training, this section provides dedicated time for focused Q&A and discussion, as well as reflection on key takeaways from the training.
