Moving beyond anger management toward curiosity, compassion,
and Self-led understanding.
Anger is often approached as an emotion to control, reduce, or manage. But what changes when, instead of asking how to get rid of anger, we become curious about what it is communicating, what it may be protecting, and what the internal system might need? Through the lens of Internal Family Systems (IFS), anger can be understood not simply as a problem to solve, but as an experience that may carry important information about boundaries, unmet needs, vulnerability, protection, power, and powerlessness.
Combustible: Looking Beyond Anger Management Through an IFS Lens invites clinicians to explore the complexity and function of anger within the internal system. Participants will examine how parts may hold, express, suppress, or respond to anger; how clinicians’ own parts related to anger and power may influence therapeutic interactions; and how greater curiosity toward anger can create opportunities for compassionate internal dialogue and increased choice in how anger is understood and expressed.
Anger also does not look or function the same way across people or internal systems. Experiences of trauma, dissociation, depression, anxiety, neurodivergence, sensory processing, and power can shape how anger is experienced, expressed, suppressed, and understood. Through didactic instruction, experiential exercises, guided meditation, and discussion, participants will explore IFS-informed and trauma-informed approaches to working with anger across these diverse experiences, including considerations for clients with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and autistic and ADHD clients.
Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all model of anger management, this workshop offers clinicians a framework for approaching anger with greater curiosity, compassion, and respect for its unique function within each client’s system.

Level of Content: Intermediate
Intended Audience: Master’s level social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and other healing professionals trained in the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. This workshop is designed for clinicians who have completed IFS Level 1 training, as well as IFS-informed clinicians who have extensive experience applying IFS approaches in their clinical work.
Course Interaction: This workshop will include didactic lecture, large and small group discussion, and live demonstrations. Participants will engage in guided experiential exercises and practical application activities. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, share insights, and engage in instructor-led dialogue throughout the training.
Workshop Learning Objectives:
- Analyze the function of anger within an IFS framework, including its relationship to emotional regulation, parts, and Self.
- Analyze how clinicians’ own parts related to anger and power may influence therapeutic interactions and clinical decision-making.
- Apply IFS techniques to facilitate internal dialogue with parts that hold or express anger related to experiences of power and powerlessness.
- Select trauma-informed strategies for supporting clients in safely exploring parts associated with anger and power.
- Differentiate how anger may present and function in clients experiencing dissociation/DID, depression, and anxiety within an IFS-informed framework.
- Analyze how sensory sensitivities and emotional responses may influence the experience and expression of anger in autistic, ADHD, and other neurodivergent clients.

Program Content and Timeline
Day 1: Looking Beyond Anger Management
Monday, October 26, 2026; 10am – 6pm EDT
10:00am – 11:45am: Welcome, Introduction & IFS Foundations
We’ll begin by grounding in the IFS model and exploring anger and power from the inside out. Through meditation, discussion, and a review of parts and Self, participants will consider the role of emotions within the internal system and revisit key IFS healing processes that provide a foundation for working with anger throughout the workshop.
11:45am – 12:00pm: 15-minute Break
12:00pm – 1:00pm: Understanding Anger: Beyond Management
What changes when we approach anger as something to understand rather than simply control or reduce? This section explores anger as a natural emotional experience, its relationship to parts and Self, and its role in emotional regulation, while considering how emotional learning and memory can shape our responses to anger.
1:00pm – 2:00pm: 60-minute Meal Break
2:00pm – 3:00pm: The Function of Anger: Parts, Power, & Protection
We’ll deepen our curiosity about what anger may be doing within the system and the experiences that shape its expression. Participants will explore the relationships among anger, power, protection, epigenetic influences, and ego states while challenging assumptions about what anger means and how it should be addressed.
3:00pm – 3:15pm: 15-minute Break
3:15pm – 4:15pm: Interactive Activity: Exploring Anger in the System
Through an experiential Metaframe activity, participants will explore the many ways anger can show up within an internal system. Personal reflection and facilitated discussion will create space to consider parts associated with anger and how individual experiences, including neurodivergence, may shape our relationship with it.
4:15pm – 4:30pm: 15-minute Break
4:30pm – 6:00pm: Integration, Discussion & Reflection
We’ll close Day 1 with space to integrate the concepts and experiences that have emerged throughout the day. Through reflection, discussion, clinical application, and Q&A, participants will deepen connections among anger, power, parts, Self, and trauma-informed practice.
Day 2: Anger Across Diverse Clinical Experiences
Tuesday, October 27, 2026; 10:00am – 4:45pm EDT
10:00am – 10:15am: Welcome, Morning Meditation and Daily Setup
We’ll begin Day 2 by reconnecting with the IFS model, resetting the group container, and grounding through a morning meditation. Participants will reflect on learning from Day 1 and prepare to explore anger in relation to different diagnoses, considering how IFS concepts of parts and Self can inform how clinicians understand and respond to clients experiencing symptoms associated with these diagnoses.
10:15am – 11:15am: Anger and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)
Anger can take on particular meaning and function within complex dissociative systems. Participants will explore how different parts may experience and express anger in the context of DID and consider IFS-informed approaches that support safety, connection, and curiosity when navigating anger and dissociation.
11:15am – 11:30am: 15-minute Break
11:30am – 12:30pm: Anger and Depression
Anger is not always visible or expressed outwardly. This section explores the ways anger may be suppressed, internalized, or difficult to access within depressive presentations and how an IFS perspective can help clinicians understand and work with parts that carry or respond to anger.
12:30pm – 1:30pm: 60-minute Meal Break
1:30pm – 2:30pm: Anger and Anxiety
Anxiety and anger can become deeply intertwined within the internal system. Participants will explore the relationship between anxiety, triggers, and anger responses while considering how IFS can support work with parts that hold anxiety and anger.
2:30pm – 2:45pm: 15-minute Break
2:45pm – 3:45pm: Anger and Neurodivergence
Anger does not look or function the same way across neurodivergent experiences. Participants will explore how sensory sensitivities, emotional responses, and neurodivergent experiences may shape the expression of anger in autistic, ADHD, and other neurodivergent clients, with attention to responsive and IFS-informed clinical approaches.
3:45pm – 4:45pm: Integration, Q & A, Closing
We’ll bring the two days together by integrating the workshop’s central themes across diverse clinical experiences. Participants will reflect on key learning, consider applications to their own clinical work, identify ways to carry the material forward, and have space for final discussion and questions.
